How To Make Your Apartment Safer and More Secure

For renters, the concept of fortifying an apartment can seem like a daunting task, especially when you’re dealing with space limitations, landlord regulations, and budget constraints. While many apartments have their own ways to maintain tenant safety, here are a few ways to make your apartment safer and more secure.

Put in Additional Locks

Your main entrance is where you want the most defense. Many apartments offer a lock on the main knob and then maybe an extra lock for a bit more security. You probably can’t add too many extra locks without violating your lease.

However, a simple door chain or deadbolt is usually okay because it is easy to install and remove. A door reinforcement kit is an affordable way to strengthen the existing door, making it much more challenging for someone to kick it in.

Install Beneficial Detectors

Many apartments offer smoke detectors, which is great. But if you want to make your apartment safer and more secure, you may want to invest in a few extra devices. One of the most common additions is a carbon monoxide alarm, which can help alert you of any dangerous fumes in the air.

Likewise, something that many renters overlook is a radon detector. Many people associate radon with houses that have basements, so they don’t think of it as a risk for a third-floor apartment unit. However, radon testing in apartment complexes is important, and having a simple radon detector in your living space could be very beneficial.

Add Internal Security Systems

While external security is crucial, internal awareness is equally important. Security cameras can be an invaluable asset in monitoring your apartment, especially if you frequently travel or have expensive belongings.

If your landlord doesn’t allow you to screw things like cameras directly into the walls, don’t fret! There are plenty of wall-safe decorating techniques that can make your apartment more secure and aesthetically pleasing.

You can install interior cameras that connect directly to your smartphone, allowing you to keep an eye on your place no matter where you are. Additionally, the visibility of these cameras acts as a strong deterrent, discouraging any ill-intentioned passerby from targeting your apartment.

Incorporating these measures will give you peace of mind and send a clear message to any potential intruders that your apartment is not an easy target. Remember, a safe apartment starts with you, and taking these actions sets a precedent for your well-being and security.
