We've had solar panels for eight years. The cost after tax breaks and incentives was around $22,000. We typically save $570 a year in net metering. So at that rate, they will pay for themselves in about 38.5 years. By that point, they will have diminished in efficiency, to the point they will need to be replaced. We recently had to have our roof replaced. It cost $2,200 to have the panels removed and replaced, in order to allow for new shingles to be installed.
