Intro

The Dune Collection is a unique and elegant series of 3D printed lighting fixtures, inspired by the captivatingly formed desert landscapes. Each lamp is meticulously crafted using advanced 3D printing technology and carefully selected quartz sand, resulting in exceptional detail and surface finish that evokes the beauty of natural formations. The sand material used in the production process diffuses the light output, creating an ambient red glow that perfectly reflects the soft haze of dusk in the barren desert landscape.

These lamps not only serve a functional purpose but also function as statement pieces that enhance the overall aesthetic of any contemporary interior. Produced by a small design studio, each piece in the Dune Collec- tion is imbued with meticulous attention to detail and a deep commit- ment to artistic design, making them a testament to the studio's dedica- tion to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in lighting design.

With their organic nature and elegant forms, these lamps are the perfect addition to any modern space, serving as a reminder of the delicate beauty of natural landscapes in our modern world. The collection is ongo- ing and will soon include wall-mounted and hanging lamps, offering a diverse range of lighting solutions.

Process

Consisting of 98% Bavarian quartz sand, the resulting objects are impres- sively durable considering their delicate appearance. A natural resin binder is impregnated after the printing process to further strengthen the structure, while preserving its original colour and texture.

Even with some of the most advanced production technology, realising these pieces physically has seen many challenges... Until recently, produc- ing objects with this kind of geometry, at scale and from aggregate mate- rial, would have been near impossible. However, some incredible work by the team at Sandhelden have allowed these boundaries to be pushed, and opened up some remarkable design possibilities.

Sustainability

At the studio, we are dedicated to producing lighting that not only delights the senses, but also respects the environment. We believe in the power of design to make a positive impact, and that includes using sus- tainable materials and production methods. That's why we use 3D print- ing technology to create our lighting pieces. This allows us to minimise waste by using only the necessary amount of materials, as well as recycle excess material to reduce our environmental footprint. Furthermore, 3D printing allows us to achieve a level of precision and intricacy that would not be possible with traditional manufacturing methods. We're also proud to use sand, a renewable resource, in the creation of our Dune Collection. By harnessing the natural beauty of sand formations, we're able to create stunning lighting pieces that celebrate the earth and the unique beauty of the natural world.

About

Rollo Studio is a design brand at the forefront of the industry, utilizing cutting-edge digital software and additive manufacturing technology to create sustainable and innovative lighting products. Our offerings include unique 3D-printed ambient lighting, sculptural floor and table lamps, LED lighting fixtures, and futuristic organic lamp shades for both retail and commercial applications. We employ experimental design concepts and digital sculpting techniques to craft products that cater to contemporary and futuristic societies. Our recent works have been showcased at presti- gious design exhibitions, fairs, and events, such as Dutch Design Week, Venice Design Biennial, Collectible Fair, and Art Basel Miami.

At the heart of our work lies the principle of biomimicry, which involves studying and imitating the designs and processes of nature to create functional and aesthetically pleasing products. We specialize in crafting contemporary lighting pieces for interior design that employ organic geometry and earthy materials. Our focus is on creating ambient sculp- tural lights for modern interiors, using Bavarian Quartz sand to shape each lamp's elegant and organic form and produce a soft and warm glow. We like to describe our approach as "craft in the digital age," as we metic- ulously produce bespoke high-end interior fixtures by collection.

Motivations and design philosophy

As the founder of Rollo Studio, I am deeply committed to using nature as a source of inspiration and then combining it with modern tools and digital fabrication techniques to create a unique form language. My design philosophy is centered around embracing craft in the digital age, with a focus on material and lighting innovation. As a designer, I have always been fascinated with naturally formed organic structures and have developed an aesthetic identity of similar character and taste. My aim has been to create structures that look as if they’ve almost grown straight out of the ground, resembling the wild and untamed character of organic matter.

By taking inspiration from nature and using it as a source of innovation, I am able to create designs that blur the boundaries between nature and modernity, leading to a world that is more in tune with the organic and untamed aspects of the environment. I believe that by valuing 'wildness' over the flat, smooth and straight designs that have become so common in today's world, society will be motivated to show greater respect and care for the environment.

Ultimately, my work seeks to contribute to a world that is less divided from nature and more attuned to its inherent beauty and complexity. I believe that my designs are about communicating a deep respect for nature and a sense of connection to the environment while also pushing the boundaries of what is possible with modern technology and materials.
