Scott Posno Design: Tucked within the forested landscape of Hornby Island, British Columbia, the Sandpiper Cabin offers a modern retreat that reflects the island’s quiet rhythm and natural beauty. Completed in 2025, the 2,100-square-foot residence unfolds across two separate buildings connected by a common formal entry, balancing a contemporary design language with the surrounding woodland setting.
The home features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, making it well suited for family living or hosting guests. Its simple, linear form and restrained material palette emphasize clean modern lines while allowing the forest to remain the primary focus. Expansive windows frame filtered views of trees and sky, drawing daylight deep into the interior and reinforcing a constant connection to nature.
Inside, open social spaces provide a sense of ease and flexibility, while private rooms are carefully positioned for quiet and retreat. Durable finishes reflect a sensitivity to the island’s climate, ensuring the cabin remains both low-maintenance and enduring. Outdoor decks extend living areas into the forest, blurring the line between interior and exterior.
The Sandpiper Cabin embodies the laid-back character of Hornby Island while offering the comforts of a modern home. At once refined and relaxed, it stands as a thoughtful retreat designed to harmonize with its setting.
About
Scott Posno Design is a Vancouver-based design studio dedicated to creating timeless and elegant houses. We work closely with clients to bring their dream homes to life.
Our practice is personalized and hands-on. We dive into the specific ways in which each client inhabits their space so that we can offer considered proportions complemented with unique design touches and thoughtfully resolved details. Each house is a delicate balance of the practical and useful with artful composition and spatial harmony. Our comprehensive design approach includes careful consideration of interiors, landscape, furnishings, and art.
We are inspired by craft and attention to detail, and that rigour guides us through complex design problems to outcomes that look and feel effortless and simple. Working in this way means involvement at every stage of the process, from initial space planning through completed construction. We work with builders, engineers, consultants, and craftspeople, creating beautiful homes that are responsive to the contours of sites, materials, and the lives of our clients.
Our work has been featured in publications such as The Globe and Mail, Arch Daily, The Toronto Star, Design Milk, Dwell, Dezeen, Western Living, Canadian House and Home, and Nuvo Magazine.
